Do I really have to decide?
When faced with two equally tough choices, most people choose the third choice: to not choose
― Jarod Kintz
To decide. To make a decision. To choose between different options. This is something over the last couple months that I have been thinking a lot of and working through. Decisions are not easy for me to make, I can never decide what I should do, especially when it comes to business. I was in a business meeting last week and someone looks at me and says, “if you do not choose, I will choose for you, and you will be stuck with the decision”. That really hit me, and had me thinking about decisions.
I always thought that “to not choose” was just putting off your decision for a while, while you are still leading your life. A realization hit me in that meeting. If I want to lead and be a great leader, I HAVE to make decisions. If I do not make my own, I am allowing others to shape my life for me.
We have two options in life. To choose on our own or to not choose and let someone else run our life. If we want to lead it takes boldness & courage.
“It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong” –Thomas Sowell
Why can’t people decide? I truly believe it is fear, fear of the unknown, fear of making a mistake, fear of taking charge of our own life. If we do not choose on our own we can blame others since they made the choice. No personal responsibility.
If you are going to become a great leader in the business world, it takes courage. Stepping out into the unknown. Forget always making the perfect decision. You can’t and you won’t. But neither will anyone else. Take responsibility for your success and failure in life, and choose to lead.
Wishing you all the best weekend.
